HOW DO WE SUPPORT THEM?
Providing Annual Financial Support
Indigo Earth Foundation supports this program through annual donations and is recognized as a MMF founding member.
WHO ARE THEY?
Protecting the Ocean's Giants
Founded in 2009 by renowned marine scientists Dr. Andrea Marshall and Dr. Simon Pierce, the Marine Megafauna Foundation was created to protect the world's ocean giants from extinction. Over the years, the team has grown, expanding its impact through global research, education, and outreach focused on the conservation of marine megafauna.
Groundbreaking Research
MMF scientists have conducted pioneering studies on sharks and rays, particularly manta rays and whale sharks, that have been instrumental in driving their global protection. These iconic species serve as powerful flagships for marine conservation, helping draw attention to the broader health of the oceans.
Broader Conservation Impact
Beyond its focus on large marine species, MMF's work benefits many lesser-known endangered animals that share the same habitats. The organization contributes to the creation and management of protected marine areas, ensuring the long-term survival of diverse marine life. MMF strategically targets locations with significant or vulnerable populations, especially key feeding and breeding sites, to maximize conservation outcomes.
Community and Capacity Building
MMF develops sustainable conservation solutions that reduce human threats to marine ecosystems while supporting community livelihoods connected to a healthy ocean. The organization also invests in building local and national scientific capacity, ensuring lasting success in monitoring and management.
MMF'S four Strategic Pillars
MMF's mission is driven by four interconnected pillars:
INSPIRE governments, policymakers, businesses, and individuals to take meaningful action.
RESEARCH to gather vital scientific data on threatened species and critical habitats.
EDUCATE local and global communities, empowering ocean guardians to protect marine life.
PROTECT marine ecosystems through effective, sustainable conservation strategies.
Tools and Initiatives
To achieve its mission, MMF employs a range of innovative tools and programs, including:
Aerial, dive-based, and boat surveys, including reef monitoring.
Tagging and photo-identification of individual animals.
Education programs for students at scholarship, graduate, and master's levels.
Conservation talks, outreach events, and awareness campaigns across multiple projects.
Training of Marine Rangers and Ocean Ambassadors.
Income diversification projects supporting coastal communities.
Development and training of dedicated research scientists.
Immersive VR technology for education and professional training.
Acoustic research and scientific publications.
Volunteer programs and global engagement through social media.
