HOW DO WE SUPPORT THEM?

Funding Teaching Assistants

Indigo Earth Foundation helps fund part of the staffing for Rainbow Kindergarten, located in Tembe, KwaZulu-Natal, by paying the salaries of two teaching assistants. This support enables stronger classroom assistance, more individual attention for young learners

WHO ARE THEY?

A Community-Led Kindergarten Born From Local Vision and Determination

This initiative was discovered in the field by our founder, who established a genuine human connection with Thulani, an experienced safari guide and the driving force behind the project.

The Rainbow Kindergarten, located in Tembe, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa, was founded by Thulani, a local field guide who was born and raised in the village and previously worked in Tembe Elephant Park, a sanctuary protecting a unique gene pool of elephant tuskers. Recognising that there was no kindergarten in the area and that the nearest ones were too far for local children to attend, Thulani decided to create a local early childhood education project.

Expanding Early Childhood Education in Tembe to Meet Growing Needs

Through his determination, he secured the resources to build a teacher's cottage and one classroom to accommodate a single age group. The project proved successful. As the children grew older, there was a need for an additional class year, while new enrolments continued for younger learners. Thulani expanded the kindergarten to include three age levels and was planning to extend the initiative to primary education before his passing in 2025.

Despite this sad loss, the Rainbow Kindergarten remains operational and continues to need support to ensure quality early childhood development in the community.

Rainbow Kindergarten

Nurturing early childhood, supporting local education

A community-led initiative that established a three-level Rainbow Kindergarten, bringing early education closer to families in an area where existing kindergartens were too far to reach. This project gives children vital access to learning, easing their transition into primary school, while supporting families to focus on earning income for their households.
