HOW DO WE SUPPORT THEM?

Providing Annual Funding to Sustain Kindergarten Operations

Indigo Earth Foundation supports this kindergarten through annual donations, helping the association meet its general operating needs, which may include, but are not limited to, equipment, teacher salaries, utilities, and school supplies.

WHO ARE THEY?

Education Gaps and Limited Resources in Rural Tanzania

Ishinde is a small rural community in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. Located near the Ruvu floodplains, the land is fertile and the community is strong and hard-working. However, as a remote rural area, Ishinde receives limited government support.

The nearest secondary school is 6 kilometres away and the nearest kindergarten is 10 kilometres away. Both are fee-paying institutions, which places education out of reach for many families.

In mainland Tanzania, the official entry age for primary school is 7 years old. Although pre-primary education is officially recognised, most centres remain under-resourced, under-staffed, and poorly equipped. Access to early learning and practical skills-training continues to be a major challenge in rural communities.

Ishinde Youth Initiative: Community-Led Projects Supporting Children and Families

The Ishinde Youth Initiative (IYI) is a non-governmental organization founded in 2013 in the village. It focuses primarily on children and young people, supporting the community through health, agriculture, and other development projects aimed at reducing poverty.

Kindergarten Development to Strengthen Early Childhood Learning and Community Well-Being

Noel Kipesha, who developed a lasting friendship with Christopher Bartlett, founder of the foundation, during earlier years of educational support, decided to return to his community to give back. He initiated a kindergarten project, alongside other community efforts such as improving water access, tree planting, and chicken farming. These projects have been funded through donors and various foundations, including Indigo Earth Foundation, initially via Indigo Safaris.

The kindergarten project aims to:

  • Give children early exposure to the school environment, helping them adjust to classroom life and teachers.

  • Support children's social, emotional, and cognitive development during the crucial early years of brain growth.

  • Reduce childcare burdens on families, allowing parents to focus on income-generating activities and indirectly supporting the education of older siblings.

  • Facilitate a smoother transition to primary school by fostering early learning habits and readiness.

This ongoing project relies on continued support to fund children's scholarships and operational costs, ensuring long-term sustainability and impact for the Ishinde community.

Scholarship Programme

The scholarship programme supports students from less-privileged backgrounds, including children from Maasai and other indigenous communities.

The objective is to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent access to education, particularly for families who would otherwise be unable to afford school fees.

Vocational Training Centre

The construction of the Vocational Training Centre began in 2021. The centre was developed in response to a significant gap: many students complete primary school without acquiring employable skills.

The facility includes classrooms and purpose-built blocks designed for practical, skills-based training.

From 2026, the centre is expanding its operations and welcoming students from across Tanzania.

Training areas include:

  • Carpentry, producing furniture and other wood-based products using locally accessible materials

  • Designing and Tailoring, including school uniforms and potential supply contracts with schools and hotels

  • Driving

Products created through the training programmes will be sold within the local community, with the intention of gradually expanding into broader markets.

The centre currently operates with basic sewing machines, both manual and electric.

Its long-term objective is to become financially sustainable and to establish itself as an innovative skills-development hub serving rural Tanzania.

Promotion is done through social media platforms in order to attract students and raise awareness of the programme.
