HOW DO WE SUPPORT THEM?
Providing Annual Funding to Sustain Kindergarten Operations
Indigo Earth Foundation supports this kindergarten through annual donations, helping the association meet its general operating needs, which may include, but are not limited to, equipment, teacher salaries, utilities, and school supplies.
WHO ARE THEY?
Education Gaps and Limited Resources in Rural Tanzania
Ishinde is a small rural community in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. Set near the Ruvu floodplains, the land is fertile and the people are hardworking, with a strong sense of community. However, as a remote rural area, Ishinde receives little government assistance. The nearest secondary school is 6 kilometres away, and the nearest kindergarten is 10 kilometres away, both are fee-paying institutions.
In mainland Tanzania, the official entry age for primary school is 7 years old. While pre-primary education is officially recognized, most centres are under-resourced, under-staffed, and poorly equipped.
Ishinde Youth Initiative: Community-Led Projects Supporting Children and Families
The Ishinde Youth Initiative (IYI) is a non-governmental organization founded in 2013 in the village. It focuses primarily on children and young people, supporting the community through health, agriculture, and other development projects aimed at reducing poverty.
Kindergarten Development to Strengthen Early Childhood Learning and Community Well-Being
Noel Kipesha, who developed a lasting friendship with Christopher Bartlett, founder of the foundation, during earlier years of educational support, decided to return to his community to give back. He initiated a kindergarten project, alongside other community efforts such as improving water access, tree planting, and chicken farming. These projects have been funded through donors and various foundations, including Indigo Earth Foundation, initially via Indigo Safaris.
The kindergarten project aims to:
Give children early exposure to the school environment, helping them adjust to classroom life and teachers.
Support children's social, emotional, and cognitive development during the crucial early years of brain growth.
Reduce childcare burdens on families, allowing parents to focus on income-generating activities and indirectly supporting the education of older siblings.
Facilitate a smoother transition to primary school by fostering early learning habits and readiness.
This ongoing project relies on continued support to fund children's scholarships and operational costs, ensuring long-term sustainability and impact for the Ishinde community.
Ischinde Kindergarten
Early education, lasting impact.
Every child deserves the chance to learn.
Indigo Earth Foundation co-sponsors a kindergarten in the remote village of Ischinde, providing essential resources for early childhood education. This support helps give children in rural Tanzania the foundations they need for lifelong learning.
