HOW DO WE SUPPORT THEM?

Exploring Support Options to Strengthen Education and Community Projects

Indigo Earth Foundation witnessed Gorilla Junction's work first-hand during an educational field trip organised by Nkuringo Safaris in November 2025.

Support from Indigo Earth Foundation is currently under discussion, and the following options are being considered:

  • Financing a solar panel project to provide lighting and reliable energy for the dormitory at the NCCDF Secondary School.

  • Raising awareness of the foundation's projects through social media, supporting fundraising efforts, and offering tax-deductible giving opportunities for donors in the UK, US, and France.

WHO ARE THEY?

Tackling Rural Poverty Through Skills Training and Sustainable Livelihoods

86% of Uganda's population lives in rural areas and depends almost entirely on subsistence farming in an environment that is degrading fast. Gorilla Junction supports these communities by helping families adopt improved farming practices and identify alternative income sources to supplement their limited household earnings.

The Gorilla Junction Foundation is committed to building self-reliance and economic empowerment within these communities. Its focus is on developing and supporting income-generating projects that offer a sustainable path out of poverty. By equipping individuals with practical skills and access to resources, the foundation enables families not only to feed themselves and stay healthy but also to generate disposable income, laying the groundwork for a more secure and prosperous future. The foundation began its journey in 2012 with a small coffee shop in Kisoro, which served as a meeting point for Nkuringo Walking Safari guides and travellers interested in fair trade and authentic local experiences.

Building Community Infrastructure to Improve Employment and Healthcare

Today, the foundation is growing. It has purchased land in Nkuringo and started construction of the Robert Brierley Memorial Community Centre. The centre's main purpose is to provide skills training in carpentry, tailoring, hospitality, and guiding, focused entirely on improving employment opportunities for the local community. A private clinic offering free access to nearby residents is also under construction, aiming to provide essential primary healthcare in a remote area where public health services are virtually nonexistent.

Comprehensive Programs Supporting Education, Microfinance, Conservation, and Clean Water

Gorilla Junction's projects, primarily centred in Nkuringo, tackle a wide range of community needs:

  • Skilling for Success: Training in arts, tailoring, guiding, and hospitality equips individuals with marketable skills for sustainable livelihoods.

  • Microfinance for Empowerment: A microfinance programme provides financial tools and support to help individuals start and expand small businesses.

  • Keep-a-Girl-Child-in-School Initiative: Ensuring girls remain in school, gain equal opportunities, and break the cycle of poverty.

  • Gorilla Conservation Coffee: From cultivation and harvesting to processing and packaging, the foundation trains local coffee farmers to produce high-quality coffee that meets international standards. This project supports livelihoods, strengthens conservation, and protects gorilla habitats.

  • Batwa Community Support: Empowering the Batwa through education, livelihood opportunities, and cultural preservation.

  • Bwindi Drop Project: Diverting excess purified water to the Nkuringo community, giving residents reliable access to clean water. This reduces health risks and frees families, especially women and children, from long, exhausting trips to distant water sources.

Empowering Communities Living Beside the Last Remaining Mountain Gorillas in Nkuringo, Uganda

Gorilla Junction Foundation was established in 2012 by Lydia Eva Mpanga, a visionary leader who believes that investing in people creates lasting change. Her mission is to empower rural families, particularly women and children, through skills training, education, and opportunities that strengthen their economic independence.
