HOW DO WE SUPPORT THEM?

Funding School Fees and Essential Supplies for Vulnerable Girls

Indigo Earth Foundation covers school fees, uniforms, transport, and educational materials for two teenage girls in Uganda.

The foundation aims to expand its support to more children, primarily girls who do not have the same opportunities as boys of the same age. By supporting their education, the foundation gives these girls the tools to pursue their ambitions and inspires others in their community to do the same.

WHO ARE THEY?

Uganda’s Education Challenges Despite Free Primary Schooling

In 1997, Uganda introduced free primary education.

This opportunity led to a dramatic increase in enrolment in government-supported schools, more than doubling within a decade. The demand and need have continued to grow ever since. By 2022, around 45% of Uganda's population was aged 14 or younger. In many ways, the program has been a success, but serious challenges remain.

The surge in student numbers forced schools, required to accept all children, to operate with far too few classrooms, teachers, latrines, desks, and learning materials. Although the official goal is to keep classes under 60 students, many are far larger. Teachers often become demoralized and leave the profession. While schools are officially "free", government funding is insufficient to cover operating costs. As a result, parents are expected to pay for uniforms, lunches, and school supplies, expenses that leave many rural families unable to keep their children in school.

Bwindi Watoto School Offers an Alternative for Vulnerable Children

Bwindi Watoto School is a private institution serving both the most vulnerable and the highest-performing children in the community. The school receives no government funding, which allows it to maintain small class sizes and a high standard of education. However, it relies entirely on tuition fees and donations for its operations.

How Educate Bwindi Supports Quality Learning

Educate Bwindi is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the education of Bwindi's most vulnerable children. It was established to achieve four key goals:

  • Educating the Poorest of the Poor: The charity finds sponsors for the most vulnerable children in the community and supports their education as far as possible. In fact, many of the children attending Bwindi Watoto Primary School have only one living or involved parent, or none at all.

  • Small Class Sizes: Class size is limited to a maximum of 21 children, compared to 40 to 70 students per class in most other Ugandan primary schools.

  • Teacher Training: Teachers receive ongoing training focused on developing and integrating critical thinking skills in the classroom.

  • A Healthy Campus: The school employs a full-time nurse and undergoes daily cleaning. Students' meals include fruits, eggs, and milk (foods rarely available in rural schools).
